Real World Weight-Loss Tips for Those Who Can't Deal with Strenuous Workouts

The wellness industry has twisted our expectations regarding what it takes to lose weight. Extreme workout trends tell consumers that we need to push our bodies to the point of injury if we want those flat abs. Meanwhile, all the diet fads leave people undernourished, unhappy, and unable to lose the weight. But what about the rest of us - those of us who want to continue living a normal life and can't dedicate six days a week to Crossfit class? What about those who are injured or sick but may need to shed some pounds for health reasons?

The truth is, you don't have to go to extremes to lose weight. Healthy weight loss takes small, sustainable changes and plenty of patience to see results. While some exercise is necessary, you don't have to break your back flipping tires across a gym to be healthy. What you do have to do is commit to a healthy, whole foods-filled diet and a safe but active lifestyle.

Enjoyable Exercise and Weight Loss

The best exercise is the exercise you enjoy - it's as simple as that. If you don't like sweating it out on a treadmill, eventually you are going to stop. If taking a yoga class puts undue strain on an injured rest, there's no point in doing it. Rather than wasting your money and time on workout fads, why not incorporate exercise into your everyday life? For instance, commit to walking your precious pup every morning and evening. Not only is dog walking a low-impact workout, but it's more enjoyable breaking a sweat with your best friend along for the ride. Walking your dog also provides a double endorphins boost - some from the exercise and some from spending time with a pet. Once you get used to your daily walks, you'll find yourself missing that surge of feel-good neurochemicals and looking forward to your next bout around the block.

More low-impact workouts:

  • Hate the treadmill? Try the elliptical instead. It's easier on the joints and allows you to use your upper body to contribute to the total body movements.
  • If you're a social butterfly, try a dance or aerobics class that feeds off group energy and pulse-pumping music to get you excited about breaking a sweat.
  • Everybody should incorporate weightlifting into their exercise routine. Lifting isn't incredibly time-consuming, many exercises can be done at home, and the muscle mass you build can help you burn more calories even when the body is at rest.

Diet Tips for Weight Loss

No matter what the infomercials tell you, you cannot lose weight without adjusting what you eat. However, jumping on to the latest diet trend is setting yourself up for failure. A better course of action is to embrace healthy foods that taste good, balance blood sugar, and nourish your body.

Eating healthy is about choosing quality ingredients that are far less processed than the convenient alternatives we've grown far too used to. Start switching out your unhealthy standbys with nutritious alternatives. For instance, if you normally love a sugary pastry for breakfast, satisfy your sweet tooth while satiating hunger with a bowl of oatmeal sweetened naturally. Or, perhaps you're craving a burger from your favorite fast-food joint. Instead of hitting up the drive-through, satisfy your body's need for iron with a lean steak? You can even make your own diet-friendly fries with real potatoes, some oil, and creative seasoning.

You don't have to go to extremes to lose weight - you just have to be patient when it comes to seeing results. Make it easy and enjoyable by finding an exercise that you look forward to. Instead of hopping on to a diet fad, trade the over-processed foods for real-world options that actually nourish your body and support its overall function. These easy changes won't give you results overnight, but with time and consistency, you'll watch the pounds melt away.
